February 22, 9am
My recent trip to Los Angeles had a bit of an influence on this week’s edition of “DJ AmperDan’s Monday Night Pop!”. I was there to visit friends and see some performances, but who knew that they would make such an impression on the show? So much so that they almost completely pushed any NoisePop! bands off the playlist. Well, them and a bunch of new releases . . .
While I was in L.A., my concert buddy Daryl contacted me and asked if I want to go to McCabe’s and see a band called Jackshit. This is a local supergroup made up of former members of Cracker, The Attractions (yes, Elvis Costello’s band), and various guests. They are amazingly talented and entertaining. But the big moment for me was when Susanna Hoffs (of The Bangles) joined them to sing “To Sir With Love” and “Manic Monday”. A brief moment, but a major one indeed.
Later that week, Daryl again rang me up and asked if I wanted to join him at The Grammy Museum to see Michelle Phillips talk about her days in The Mamas and The Papas. Since I’ve loved The Mamas and The Papas and those signature vocal harmonies as long as I can remember, this was a no brainer. Michelle didn’t sing, but then we didn’t expect her to. But she did tell a lot of stories about how the group was put together, how John Phillips worked out their harmonies, and just what really happened to get her kicked out of the band for those six months. She was bright, witty, amusing, and still as sexy as ever.
And of course, the reason I was in L.A. was to see Lia Rose play at Lot 1 Café with Kelly McFarling and fellow Or, The Whaler Tim Marcus. The three of them joined forces to play two sets. One featuring Kelly McFarling in the lead role, with Lia and Tim backing her up; and one with Lia taking the lead, with Kelly and Tim in the backing roles.
I have been a fan of Lia Rose since I first heard her band Built for The Sea a few years ago. And I was very pleased when I heard she was joining Or, The Whale (one of my favorite Bay Area bands). And as a solo performer, Lia is just as amazing as she is when she’s surrounded by other amazing musicians. He voice is so moving, and her songs are so lovely . . . And her choice of cover songs and her rearrangements of them are brilliant. I can’t say enough about this amazing musician.
I was talking with Lia before the show, and she asked if I had heard Kelly McFarling. I hadn’t, and Lia said I was going to be blown away. And she was right. Kelly has a beautiful voice, a great stage presence, and a deft hand at songwriting. I was totally impressed. As I think you will be. Check out her music in my second set of the show.
All around, it was a night of beautiful singing, amazing vocal arrangements, and stellar songs. Plus there were three other performances that night as well!
One that really impressed me was a young woman named Nettie Rose. Nettie plays in a modern Americana style, with lots of jazz and country inflections as well. She currently lives and works in Santa Monica, but she spent some time in Oakland. And The Bay Area has influenced and features prominently in her songs. I was so impressed that I bought her demo CD, and played a selection from it in my opening set.
The other driving influence on my song selection for this show was the crop of new releases I received this week. I’ll leave it to you to give them a listen, but I’ll point them out here . . .
- Mister Loveless – “Wild Summer” from their newly released Daytrotter Session (2/14/12).
- Persephone’s Bees – “We’ve Just Begun”
- DangerMaker – “You’re Not There”
- Love The Bomb – “Hot Stuff” from their new EP “Love The Bomb”
- And some new to me tracks from Felsen and The Jay Trainer Band.
Of course, I think they are all brilliant, otherwise why would I have played them? But really, these are records that you, my loyal listeners, should seek out and buy. As well you should seek out all these musicians and see them play live. It’s what is going to keep our local music scene alive!

With NoisePop! 2012 just around the corner (Feb 21 – 26), it seemed appropriate to dedicate this week’s “DJ AmperDan’s Monday Night Pop!” show to highlighting the local Bay Area bands playing shows during NoisePop! So that’s what we did. Not that that was all we did. There are plenty of great bands playing out before NoisePop! that I wanted to spotlight. Not to mention an acoustic tribute to The Ramones happening on February 18 at Thee Parkside called “Sheena is A Folk Rocker”. Which is why there is so much Ramones music in my opening set.
On top of that, I had a few brand new tracks that were released this past week that I wanted to share. Namely “Just Getting By” by Sutro and “Modern Man” by Kodacrome. Both fine tracks by fine San Francisco bands. Well worth checking out.
Of course, if you missed any or all of the show, you can get caught up by listening to the podcast.

This week, “DJ AmperDan’s Monday Night Pop!” stayed true to format, spinning two hours of the best of the current Bay Area Pop and Rock scene. A musical sampler of upcoming club shows and featured bands. All put together and presented by a guy who truly loves this music.
Tonight I had a couple of cool new tracks to share. The first is by a Portland band called Slutty Hearts whose new single “Red Salt” really blew me away when I heard it earlier this week. A wonderful little pop gem to set the tone for the rest of the show. And I like the name of their CD too: “Learned It By Watching You”.
The other brand new track I was excited to play is from Two Seconds new EP “Sleep in The Yard”. For those of you who don’t know, Two Seconds are Sierra Frost and Lily Faden. They started the band in high school, and were quite active, playing all over the Bay Area, in mid- to late 2000’s. After Lily moved to NYC, Sierra did time in Elephone and formed the various incarnations of The Downer Party. But these last few months, Sierra and Lily have been working on some tracks together, and “Sleep in The Yard” is the result. And it’s fantastic. specially for those of us who only caught the bleeding tail end of their career. Check it out.
The rest of the show mostly features music by bands with shows coming up in the next week or so. A lot of great music, and well sequenced too, if I do say so myself. I real nice flow to the over all listening experience.
Or so it seemed to me as I was doing it. Of course, we won’t know just how well it came off until we listen to the podcast.

This week, “DJ AmperDan’s Monday Night Pop!” again continued in its usual format of playing the Best of The Bay Area’s underground indie Pop and Rock scene. Just Maximum Bay Area Pop, highlighting upcoming local performances, a few new releases, and a whole bunch of current favorites. Results: another fine show.
One of the cool things about following the Bay Area concert calendar, and letting it dictate what I play, is each week my show takes on the flavor of the scene. Some weeks it’s upbeat and very poppy, like last week; some weeks, it’s hard are rockin’; and others, like this week, it’s more mellow and easy going. And I hope my show reflects the ever-changing mood of the city’s musical scene.
This week I was also feeling a bit reflective, and chose songs from some “older” recordings. Like “Glow” from The Trophy Fire. It’s not their latest track, or even from their latest album (which is brilliant none the less), but I just wanted to hear that opening guitar line at that particular moment.
Maybe this reflective mood was inspired by Box Set, the band that I was very into in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, reuniting for the benefit of the Bazaar Café on Clement Street. I couldn’t go to either of those two shows, but I was there in spirit. A few videos from those two nights posted on YouTube reminded me of just why I was so enamored of Box Set in those days. Jeff and Jim still have a special magic that few others have. And I was feeling nostalgic for those Misfit days.
Ah, well . . . such is what it is. And that’s the show. I’m not sure what underlying narrative the podcast will reveal, but I’m anxious to hear. As is, per usual, my psychoanalyst. Though she never tells me what she thinks . . .

Just Maximum Bay Area Pop, highlighting upcoming local performances, a few new releases, and a whole bunch of current favorites. Another incredibly strong show, with lots of great music.
Again, a strong Bay Area concert calendar drove much of the show’s programming and record selection. But also strong this week were the number of new releases I had to share. Strong brand new releases from Lia Rose, Sorry Ever After, Wax Idols (not that new, but I just got their new album), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (from L.A.), and Doe Eye made their Radio Valencia debut tonight, and exerted a strong influence on the show’s direction.
And what of that direction? Was there some underlying story behind the song selection and sequencing? Of course! But just what that unconscious narrative is, will only be revealed by the podcast. And then, only through repeated listening, according to my psychoanalyst. For which he charges me handsomely.

Tonight, “DJ AmperDan’s Monday Night Pop!” returned to its usual format of playing the Best of The Bay Area’s underground indie Pop and Rock scene. No more holiday tunes, no more countdowns, just highlighting upcoming local performances and maximum Pop! And I think it was an incredibly strong show. Lots of great music, for sure.
Well, I did have one more guideline I set for myself when I was picking the records to play tonight. Since so many really good records came out as singles (or at least single song releases, in these days of digital releases), and since I excluded single releases in my countdowns of the Best of 2011 lists, I thought I would work as many into tonight’s set as possible. Not in a countdown or ranked format, just sprinkling them in where appropriate. And I think it worked out pretty well.
Except that I still have a boatload of amazing single releases from 2011 that I wasn’t able to get to. So I’ll be sprinkling them over next week’s set too.
In my usual format, I look at my Bay Area concert calendar to see who is playing out in the coming weeks, and work songs by those bands into my show. But this week, a funny thing happened. An unusually high number of my favorite local bands are all playing shows here in the Bay Area on Friday January 20th. The same night as the Radio Valencia benefit dinner with David J at Chez Poulet.
So tonights show, at least on the surface, sounds like a tribute to Friday January 20th. And maybe it was, unintentionally. Wonder what the significance of January 20th is . . . hmmm.
Regardless of that, towards the end of the show I kinda got the feeling that something unseen was at work in the selection and sequencing of the records I played. I couldn’t tell if there was an underlying narrative at the time, but it makes me curious to hear the podcast. As I’m sure my psychotherapist is too.

January 3, 12am
Tonight, I celebrated my birthday by playing a few of my favorite “birthday” songs in the opening set, then counting down my Top 11 Albums and Top 11 EP’s of 2011 on “DJ AmperDan’s Monday Night Pop!”. But instead of counting them down as two separate lists, I shuffled them together so I played an album track followed by an EP track. That way, we reached the Number One Album and Number One EP at the end of the show.
This made for some interesting programming. Song I never would have put together ended up playing back to back, with some interesting results. Also, because I played little two-song sets, instead of my usual four or five song sets, there was a lot more of me talking about the music, the bands, and the records. I hope listeners didn’t find it too boring. Still the music is excellent, and well worth suffering through any of my inanities.
My criteria for compiling the lists were pretty simple. The album or EP had to be released in 2011. It had to be solid, no filler or remixes. And I had to have played it on the air at some point. This cut out a few really good records that only came out at the tail end of 2011 when I was playing holiday music. These I’ll reclassify as “early 2012” recordings for consideration on next year’s list.
Still this left me with quite a few records to chose from, especially on the EP list. I think this might be due to economics. EPs are a bit cheaper to put out than a full length, and considering the job market in the Bay Area right now, it’s not too surprising that more local bands released EPs than full-lengths. But I decided not to limit my lists to local Bay Area bands only. Just no major label or major touring band stuff, so you won’t find a lot on my lists that show up on the Best of 2011 lists from Pitchfork or Spin or (heaven forbid) Rolling Stone.
After that, the selection process was based on my own subjective impressions and evaluations of the records. So maybe these lists say more about my personal taste than about the state of music today in general. But one thing it does say is there is a wide variety of amazingly good and well crafted music being made in small markets like the San Francisco Bay Area.
Here are the lists . . . .

With Christmas just past, the holiday hangover is still upon us; so this week, “DJ AmperDan’s Monday Night Pop!” is slowly transitioning from Holiday Music Mode back to regular ol’ music mode. Studies have shown that cutting off holiday music cold turkey could have an adverse effect on our collective psyche, so we might want to take it slow. Besides there were more than a few really good new indie holiday tracks released this week, and I wanted to play them for you.
You’ll find the new Holiday tracks at the top of the Playlist. I saved the brand new non-holiday tracks for the second half of the show. I won’t bother telling you about them here. Instead, I think you listening to them would better serve both you and the tracks. And that’s why I’m directing you to the podcast.
