I’ve uploaded three new-ish Metal Asylum podcasts, so check ‘em out if you missed the live broadcast. If you’re wondering “However shall I decide which podcast to download?” here’s a brief summary of each:

9/15/12: This is the one where I play all bright, sparkly new music.

9/29/12: This is the one where my mom makes her radio debut.

10/13/21: This is the one without a theme, but you’ll hear some kick-ass Saudi Arabian metal, so that’s cool.

Saturday was Backwards Day at the Metal Asylum! I have a slightly predictable habit of playing thrashy, punky, old-school metal towards the beginning of the show, then a little bit of death, ending with a transition to black metal or doom/sludge. Then, I typically leave the studio at 2 in a doom-y daze, blinded by sunlight as I exit Chicken Shack, gorge on Dynamo Donuts, and scoot home to take a nap. BO-RING! In the spirit of shaking things up, I reversed the typical playlist, and boy oh boy, I was PUMPED for the rest of the day.

Also. I have also re-fallen in love with Metallica. They’ve always been dear, but after their unforgettable spectacle at Outside Lands (8/11), I have been waking up every morning with a medley of Kill ‘Em All tunes whirling around in my head. My friend Andrea snapped this pic from the Snake Pit during the show. This is now my happy place.

The Metal Asylum Playlist: 7/21/12

I’m back in SF, and that means I get to jam my metal LIVE in the studio again. Although pre-recording the shows from Austin has been fun (thanks, Mr. Evan Dunivan, for your production mastery), there’s nothing like being in front of a live mic to catch all the “ums” and “uhs” that I am so prone to mumble. Live radio, it’s a wondrous thing.

I started out the set today with some thrashy, dirty, retro tunes, then transitioned into some Black Metal, and ended on a moody note with some slow dirges. I was pleased as punch to dedicate songs to two of my awesomest listeners, Alison and Celisse, and to provide some tidbits of Babylonian theology.

* Disclaimer: If you’re planning on asking, “Where’s Metallica?” or “I don’t see (fill in the blank with your BFF’s thrash/metal crossover from 1992)”, I’d like to point out that this isn’t some kind of VH1 “Best American Metal” countdown. No, sir. I just wanted to play two hours of great music that just so happens to hail from the muthafuckin’ USA! USA! USA!

It’s the Metal Asylum BRITISH INVASION! Today’s show is dedicated to my amazing dad, Gerry Worthington, who was the Metal Asylum’s #1 fan, and is sorely missed. Born and raised in Ringwood (Hampshire), England, he would have appreciated the 100% Blue Blood English Metal playlist I put together in his honor.

I’m sure you lot are familiar with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) during the late ’70s and early ’80s, but you might not be aware of the myriad kick-ass hardcore, death metal, black metal and proto-industrial metal bands that herald from Dear Old Blighty. From Birmingham to London to Stoke-on-Trent, I’ve got it covered.

So, bottoms up, enjoy the tunes, and as my dad would say: “OFF WE GO!”

Not even a rainy, mildly-hungover Saturday morning with a re-routed MUNI bus could stop me from pumping metal today! I was pretty excited for the line-up of heavy jams I put together – a lot of shiny new stuff (Black Breath, Black Sheep Wall and Vaura), some really old (Pentagram and Priest), and a lot in-between. Oh, and here’s the awesome Oderus Urungus vs. Dave Mustaine clip I mentioned on the show:
