The myth of the Power Trio has made many a young rocker bang their head in tribute throughout the years. Though there are many trios in many genres, the Power Trio is all about ROCK! I have been wanting to host a special on my favorite trios for quite some time, and I figured being holed up in quarantine is the perfect opportunity to throw down.
And of course I wasn’t able to fit in everyone I wanted in these two short hours. This is a taste. A tease. My name is Hell, after all.
So pull out those air guitars, basses and drums, let your hair down (or put on a wig if you need to), and let’s get rockin’ for the next two hours!
Enjoy.

Another week another show from my bed. It’s a great bed, really. I can’t say enough good things about the comfort. You should really try it out with me. Perhaps when all of this hullabaloo is past us, I can have a contest and host the winner in my bed for my show. It wouldn’t be the first time.
When I was a DJ at 89.7FM KFJC (88-97), our late, great engineer Eric Weaver liked to use me as a guinea pig when it came to live remotes. I hosted a number of live morning shows from local cafes, when we had the idea of hosting a show from my bedroom. It was fundraiser time and we figured someone would want a chance of having spending the morning in bed with a dashing young DJ and a crew of engineers, all cramped in my little bedroom. And we were right! We called it “Breakfast in Bed with the Rev! I went by the Reverend Dah Wave back in those days. Truth be told John Hell was born in late August 1994. But that story is for another time.
I can’t recall much about the couple that donated for the chance to spend their morning in bed with me. They were in their 20s, and thought it would be a hoot to spend 6-10am in the San Mateo bedroom with a long haired non-commercial radio DJ, his three roommates, and three staff members of KFJC. Actually one of my roommates was a KFJC staffer (RIP Spiderman). I made everyone pancakes, eggs and bacon for breakfast, and for the mic breaks I made them jump into my bed with me. It had to feel real, so every 10-20 minutes for four hours they had snuggle up with me in my queen-sized bed…with my engineer and another staffer sitting around too.
The music was being played back in the KFJC studios. We would “hand off” to the board op when we were done talking, and coordinate when to come back live to my bedroom.
Why am I telling you all of this? Oh right, I have been doing my shows from my bed ever since this pandemic has started. At least I’m lucky enough to be able to do this. Trust me, I do not take it for granted. I will not just phone in a show. I really love being able to share two hours a week with you. I’m thinking about taking on a second slot where I can play my live show in full. I have thousands. Don’t believe me? Take a look for yourself. I still have a few hundred to add to that list, and it just keeps on growing.
I’ll keep playing the music. You keep listening, and we’ll get through all of this together.
Enjoy.

For the people in the back, I’ll tell the story again.
I used to host a mid-day jazz/soul/funk show at KFJC 89.7FM on the Foothill College campus, south of Stanford. I was there 88-97, but only hosted this particular show from 93-95 I think. Anyway, every Friday at noon I would play 30 minutes of James Brown, and called it “The Brown Bag Lunch”. It was so much fun. Being on a college campus means that a lot of coeds would walk by, and me being a young 20-something, I would keep the studio door open to the walking path, and the monitors turned way up, to really feel the funk! And I would dance, and I would sing, and I would turn on the mic and I would shout in James Brown fashion, YEEEEEEEEOW!
It was fun.
I even got to interview the Godfather by phone before one of his Bay Area shows. I tell the story during this show…again.
Every May 3rd KFJC hosts a 24+ hour Mayhem special in celebration of James Brown’s birthday called “Doin’ It To Death”. I always get very excited to host a four hour set; it’s like a holiday for me. My employer is aware of this, and supports it. Thanks boss!
There was no birthday special this year. Thanks COVID-19.
So instead I thought I would play two hours of James Brown for you Monday night. And then a miraculous thing happened: DJ Doug, who follows me on Monday nights 10-midnight, couldn’t make it! So I have four hours of the Hardest Working Man In Show Business. Mr. Please Please Please. Soul Brother #1. The Minister of the New New Super Cool Funk. Mr. Dynamite Himself: JAMES BROWN!!!!
Yeah, it’s like that. I keep mostly to my favorite era, 1968-1975.
Everybody is here: Maceo, Fred, Pee Wee, Bobby Byrd, The Female Preacher Lyn Collins, Clyde and Jab’O, Bootsie and Phelps Collins, and so many more to funk up your day, and piss James off.
The second half of the show focuses on my live collection of James Brown. This is some groovy funk for your face.
So get on the good foot, put on your hot pants, and get ready to be a sex machine for the next four hours!!!
Enjoy.

So, I think I’m getting the hang of this shelter-at-home thing. I have more music playing than usual, and I’m actually getting along with my family! Who knew that bonding with family is actually a thing?
And when it comes to hosting my weekly show, Hell’s Kitchen Radio, on Radio Valencia, I have more time to go through my collection to choose music I think you’ll enjoy. This show was fairly diverse, and a lot of fun to put on for you.
I was reminded the other day that May 3rd is fast approaching, which means another James Brown birthday special is due. Many of you know I am a huge JB fan, and I co-host the annual KFJC 26 hour James Brown birthday special “Doin’ It To Death”, every year on his May 3rd birthday. Alas, this year, the special is not happening; a TRAVESTY!
But do not be alarmed, this Monday night, 8-10PM (PDST) I will be playing two hours of James Brown and James Brown-related material. So get your funky dance shoes ready to groove. Get on with your bad self, because John Hell will have you gettin’ up on the get down Monday night at 8.
As for this show, take a look at the playlist below and enjoy.
If you’re on the podcast page on Radio Valencia, then you will notice the little white dice on the green field. If you click it, you will be taken to a random show of mine. Go ahead, click the dice, take the ride. Thanks to my boy, Wrybread, for putting that together.
Enjoy.

If you’re like me, you get bored really easily. Surprisingly I’m not that bored these days. Granted, it’s like Groundhogs Day over here, and my hygiene is questionable, but I have plenty of things to take up my time. After all, I have a toddler running around the house. And there a lot of music to enjoy. I know the first place I want to head to when all of this is past us is to any one of the many local record stores in my hood. Please please please reopen. I have been doing my part from home however. I have bought some records, digitally, and even a few LPs I hope are delivered before this pandemic passes. The record business is essential, isn’t it?
So, we’re moving into month two of this thing. How have you evolved as a being during this time? Respond in the comments with your most creative creation. I’m reading more for pleasure, playing my guitar, and using leftover food in ways I never though could be done. Food is art. Who knew?
As for this show you are about to listen to (and thanks in advance for doing so), it’s still about diving deeper into my digital library. It seems that I have an awful lot of music on these hard drives. And you’re better for it.
The only downside to hosting a radio show from my bedroom is the energy is not nearly the same as when I’m rockin’ out from behind the studio console. I’m more quiet because I have a toddler being put to bed in the next room. He really needs to learn to just deal with the volume, right? Thanks.

Well here I am, week four of this shelter-at-home, and I’m finding I’m not that bored. I just want to go record shopping in a record store. Oh don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of music to keep my going, and I have purchased a few LPs online, and ever took sweet advantage of the recent Ripple Records download deal. WOW! But there is nothing like walking into my favorite record stores, thumbing through the new arrivals, chatting with the clerks about what they are enjoying, searching the 7″ sections, checking out my very long want list, and looking to see if is hidden in the stacks.
I love how stores are willing to order for me, but part of the fun for me is to see if a record like Money Chicha has shown up, just so I can get that deep feeling of satisfaction for finally landing that long sought after LP.
There’s a ritual to the whole process of record buying. I think only crate-diggers really know what I’m talking about. I used to be a club DJ in San Francisco, and I used to shop for 12″s weekly. Damn, I had a lot. It actually felt pretty good to unload those about a decade ago when I started up Radio Valencia.
Speaking of Radio Valencia, we have a new home. The lease is about to be signed, and since we’re in a shelter-at-home and cannot move in yet, our new landlord is willing to hold off on rent until we actually move in. Thanks landlord, you rock! And we cannot wait to rock very soon in our new digs. Details are coming once everything is secure. But after ten years and our fourth home, I can promise you when I say this is going to be the absolute BEST home for Radio Valencia. I hope we’re here for years to come. And you can even come hang out there with us!!!
As for this recent show you are about to enjoy, it’s a deeper dive into my digital library. It’s large, but I miss playing my vinyl for you. There are a few live treats in there, and even some brand spanking new Ty Segall. He covers Harry Nillson on a new EP.
I may try to host a show between my Monday night show, featuring my live library. I have over 4000 live shows from over 500 bands of many genres. And with all this sitting around the house, I’m downloading multiple shows a day. As of this writing I have a PIL show from 1982 and a Germs shows from 1978 downloading. And I have over 1000 Grateful Dead shows too. Maybe I should log into a separate slot just to play live Dead?
Hmmmmmmmm…..
That’s enough for now. Time to enjoy two hours of Hell’s Kitchen Radio.
Enjoy.

Hey radio lovers, it’s my first official show since December 2019. What I miss?
In all seriousness though, this is a remarkable time. How are you spending your days and nights? Reading those books that have been sitting on the shelf, that you swore you would read if only you had the time to do so? Watching those French Noir films that you once loved in college and realize they haven’t aged all that well? Pulling out those dusty puzzle boxes sent to you by grandma when you were 20 (even though you stopped doing puzzles when you were 12)? I actually love a good landscape jigsaw puzzle. How about finally listening to that John Coltrane 45 minute Ascension and the five alternate takes, each 45 minutes to one hour in length? No time like the present.
And the present is all we’ve got! What would Eckhart Tolle say?
How are tight knit families doing? How is the single-set doing? How are people with horrible roommates doing? How well are you practicing social distancing? FLATTEN THE CURVE OR DIE!
I’m mostly concerned about Tinder. How ever will they survive? Did they get a piece of the stimulus package too? HA! Get it? Tinder? Stimulus? I crack myself up.
On Monday afternoon I put out a call on ye ol’ Facebook asking for songs I should play for my triumphant return to Radio Valencia in the pandemic age. The list still hasn’t ended. All songs except two are from that list. Thanks a ton!
On a side note, Radio Valencia lost its space last January, after we were told (along with all other tenants) that our landlord had failed to keep up rent payments to the owner. We all were given 48 hours to move out. After a couple of months searching SF for a new space, we finally landed what we believe to be our most ideal studio location yet! And then COVID-19 struck, which is keeping us from setting up the new space. I cannot wait to share details about our new home. It’s sooooo exciting.
I have never hosted a show remotely from my home before, so you have heard a lot of reruns from me over the past few months, until Monday night! I’d like to say the show went off without a hitch, but you’ll notice the first three minutes is a lot of noise while I scrambled to pay for the Audio Hijack I was using. And later in the show I introduced a Johnny Cash song (“Solitary Man“), which was playing on my laptop, but not on my show. There’s a learning curve here, folks. Thanks for sticking with ol’ Johnny Hell through all of this.
I would like to thank my brother-from-another-mother Adam McKintosh for donating the Blue Yeti microphone to the cause. Some heroes don’t wear capes.
Also, not all songs are from the FB request list. Local violinist, vocalist, and all-around exceptional musician Emily Palen sent me a couple of new tracks from her trio: KnightressM1. I was thrilled to pieces to play “SALT”, from their upcoming release, TBA. Check them out live, whenever and wherever that happens in the (hopefully) near future. I love getting turned on…to good new music, and this group really sent me into the stratosphere. I hope you enjoy the track as much as I do. And dig the “lyrics”. Perfect timing indeed. It really fit with the show’s theme.
OK, enough of me. Take a look at the set list below. There are more hits in this one than I have ever played on my shows before, but fuck it, it’s my show, and we’re all bored.

Oh Dougie, you were too big for this world. Where are you now? Are you flying through the ether, looking down on us mortals, laughing from the belly about how silly we all are for crying over your passing? Or are you gone in a blink of an eye, only to live on in our memories?
Father, husband, friend, Franklin Douglas Fuller (November 5, 1962 – December 17, 2019) left us after a short six-month fight with brain cancer. He was the brightest of lights, that drew everyone to him who met him, and even those who had only heard of him wanted to know more. Whether you knew him as Doug, Toad, or even Ouchy the Clown, Doug was always present when he was with you. He made you feel special. He wanted everyone to have a good time, and he went out of his way to make certain that you were made to feel comfortable and welcome, while also pushing every limit you had. Of course Doug wouldn’t push any limit of yours that he hadn’t already pushed in himself, and found joy in. He was all about joy. Pure, unadulterated joy. He also walked the fine line of giving and not giving a fuck at the same time; all with a smile on his face, and a ready joke at the ready.
I asked Doug to serve papers on my ex-wife a few years back. I can honestly say it was the only time I have ever seen him nervous. He asked me if she was going to pull a knife on him? I think he should have worn clown makeup to the door. At the very least, a clown nose! Our daughters are friends, and his wonderful wife Candace is a close friend of my wife and mine. The memorial on December 30th at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland is what you think of when you imagine the way you want to be remembered. It was a who’s-who of the Bay Area prankster scene. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as speaker after speaker came up to say what all of us already knew in our hearts: Doug Fuller lived life to the Fullerest and can never be replaced.
Oh yes, Doug also curated an annual holiday music set. You really must listen in. Go to his page here and download the link. I believe there are links to all of his previously made music lists for you to enjoy.
Doug, this show is for you, my dear friend.
Enjoy.

OK, so someone posted this fabulous YouTube clip recently of every sample used in Paul’s Boutique (though I think a few are missing), and I of course just had to track down each and every sample, 99 in all. I already had about 60 of the tracks, but the hunt for the remainder has been fun, nevertheless. And you, my dear listener, are the one’s to benefit from this scavenger hunt. This is why you tune in, right? Right.
Anyway, I start the second hour with eight tracks used to sample “Egg Man” and then follow it up with said Beastie Boys track. I’ll be doing this for each of the tracks on this classic LP in the weeks to come. Tune in and enjoy.
I also took this holiday show to share some longer and stranger tracks as you can see from the playlist below. I picked up a couple of James Brown/JBs LPs this past week, as well as some 80s and 90s punk 7″s . I also close out the show with a few live cuts that I think are worthy for your ears. If you’re playing the LDB game (and why would you?) then you better stop following the Abbey Lincoln track. Then again, the Lou Rawls version is my favorite LDB produced.
Happy holidaze and Treason’s Greetings to you all.

I like to rock. I like to do a lot of things. I like to get mellow with some swinging jazz. I like to get deep with some heart-felt blues and soul. I like to get my groove on with some sticky funk. But my go to is guitar-driven, vocals-howlin’, drums-poundin’ ROCK! I’ll be the first to admit I have a tad bit of aggression that builds up from time to time. Instead of taking it out on my loved ones, I prefer to take it out on my music collection.
This show has a lot of rock that helped my through 2019. I don’t think I’m going to host a Best of 2019 show, so this one will need to do. Almost all these tracks were released this year. There’s also some other tasty treats, including a recent addition to my live music library, that doesn’t rock, but certainly soothes.
It’s also been a year already since the death of Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks, so I not only have a favorite tune of theirs, but a brilliant cover by Le Butcherettes, a band you really must see live.
I’m headed to some record stores this weekend. I can’t wait to share what I find on my show next Monday. Tune in!
Enjoy.
