A Season in Hell #44: Radio Valencia: In Chinese the Number 4 = Death

June 27, 7pm

A couple of Sundays ago I had the extreme pleasure of attending Songwriters Unplugged over at Yoshi’s SF. Songwriters Unplugged is a weekly show, that features a set from three local singer/songwriters. It’s a great way for a great venue to support local talent. Radio Valencia then plays the recorded performance on the following Saturday, 4-6pm. Tune in, you’ll be glad you did.

Tonight on A Season in Hell, guitarist Jason Cole of Utah Girl came by. I got to see him and his partner Amy MacClain at the Yoshi’s show and was thoroughly impressed.

They have a six song EP CD out right now. They’re completing their first full length, but need your help. Head on over to Kickstarter to donate to the production-cost-cause.

I play three Utah Girl songs tonight. Check out “Percents”.

Here’s the link to the archived show.

A Season in Hell #43: Radio Valencia: YOUR Community Resource

June 20, 7pm

I co-created Radio Valencia to support local people doing great things for the community. Tonight on the show I interviewed two people who are indeed doing something great, relevant, and desperately needed in our great city by the bay. Shawn O’Shey and Olivia Heart joined me tonight to talk about the Castro Country Club. The CCC is a clean & sober gathering place for all people and a home for the queer recovery community.

They endeavor to be a space where all can seek wisdom, serenity, courage and joy.

Since April 1983, the Castro Country Club has been a safe haven for LGBT people in recovery from drugs and alcohol. Now, the building that has been home to the Castro Country Club for nearly three decades is being sold.

GO TO THIS SHOW!

Writing Man Productions and The Castro Country Club are co-producing the June, 2011 Laybelline show, Queens Are Made: They Are Not Born! At The Dark Room Theater on Thursday, June 23. The show is going to be a benefit for the CCC’s Keep the Steps in the Castro campaign.

This promises to be a drag show of EPIC PROPORTIONS!!!

Monday night on A Season in Hell, with John Hell

June 19, 9pm

8-10pm Monday night on A Season in Hell with John Hell, Ivy Drip and Shawn O’Shea will be on promoting their upcoming show Queens Are Made: They Are Not Born!

The Castro Country Club is a clean & sober gathering place for all people and a home for the queer recovery community.

That’s where Keep the Steps in the Castro comes in.

The goal of the campaign is to raise the funds for a down-payment to buy the building or to secure a new home in the Castro neighborhood. All funds raised will be used to purchase, secure a long-term lease, and/or modify space to suit the needs of the Club.

Please consider joining the Keep the Steps in the Castro campaign as a dues-paying member to ensure the future of the Castro Country Club. Several levels of membership are available to fit any budget. For more information or to become a CCC member now, click the “Donate Now” button to the right.

Or send a check to the Castro Country Club at the address listed to the left.

Please make checks payable to Castro Country Club and note “Keep Steps in the Castro” on memo line.

Writing Man Productions was founded in Philadelphia in 2007 by Shawn O’Shea.  They made moved to San Francisco and made their West Coast debut in August, 2010 with Sigh-Fi; An Evening of Science Fiction Themed Comedic Shorts at The Dark Room Theater which they have come to consider their unofficial home!

The Laybelline Show is a monthly drag show normally held one Saturday each month at the Castro Country Club.  It is always a fundraiser for the Keep the Steps in the Castro Campaign.

The Dark Room Theater – actually, I’m sure you know more about it than I do.

A Season in Hell #42: Radio Valencia: ROCK FIGHT 6!!!

June 13, 4pm

Once again it’s the night that I show little Rotten Ronnie Donovan of Firehouse Kustom Posters who the real Rock Star is. Me!

Rock Fight 6 runs twice a year: December and June. For four hours Ron and I bombast each other with glorious live bootleg material, both of are avid collectors of. We’re a bit obsessed.

I’ve destroyed Ron the last five times. The show starts at 6, and at the moment it’s 5:55 and he’s not even here yet. He’s been late before; up to an hour, once. It’s a sure bet that Ron won’t be in his groove until the third hour. Unless of course, if he’s drunk, which is what happened in Rock Fight 5. You can hear Rock Fight 5 by going here. Listen to the second half of the show the get an idea of what I mean.

Ok, he showed up at 6:04. Let’s get it on!

The plan for tonight is for each of us to play a live cut, one after the other. We try to one-up the other. We’re also going to do “Rock Blocks”, which will consist of each co-host to do a 20 minute block of music of his choice. We do two blocks each.

To know who played what, note the JH (John Hell) or RD (Ron Donovan) at the end of each track. Also, not only are the tracks and artists listed, but the date of each performance. If you would like more info on the shows we played, please visit http://db.etree.org.

Update: Ron did not get drunk tonight. I have to admit, he may have actually tied me tonight. I’m 5-0-1 after 6 Rock Fights.

You can see playlists of all Rock Fight’s on this blog. Scroll back.

Visit my Radio Valencia archive page to download or stream this show. Go there now!

Vote for Radio Valencia, Best Radio Station in Bay Guardian’s Best of the Bay 2011

June 9, 10pm

It’s that time of year once again: the time to get out your #2 pencils and vote for your favorites in the 37th annual San Francisco Bay Guardian’s Best of the Bay.

It’s the issue we all love. It’s the issue we hold onto the longest. It’s the one that we get angry at our six year old’s for using as liner for their hamster cages.

This year I want you to do something very, VERY important. I want you to vote Radio Valencia as the Best Radio Station in the Bay Area. Truth be told, we are the best radio station in the bay area. Don’t believe me? Have you even taken a listen to us yet? We are without a doubt, the BEST RADIO STATION IN THE BAY AREA!

I’ve been doing non-commercial (and a small amount of commercial) radio in the Bay Area since 1988. The best radio is radio that takes chances. Radio Valencia takes chances when it comes to content and programming. We have the best, most eclectic and relevant music programming, and the most interesting interviews.

You can also vote for your favorite DJ. I’ll leave that one up to you. Though I’m tempted to ask you to vote for me (as I have endlessly sent Tweets out asking for you do so), I’m going to refrain here. Do listen to Radio Valencia, and do vote for us. As for your favorite DJ, go with what your conscience is telling you.
