After careful consideration, and a close listen to my pre-Halloween show, I came to the decision that it just plane blew. Therefore, I have made the executive decision for a do-over. The first hour on Monday night was some sweet spooky tunes to keep the holiday spirit going. Pun intended.
To make this night even better, the second hour features not one, but two remarkable performers: Kate Vargas and Eric McFadden. If you have tuned into my show over the years, then you know Eric is a longtime friend, and always a great interview, always with fun stories to share. Tonight Eric is joined by singer/songwriter Kate Vargas. I’ve been playing the hell out of her recent release, Rumpumpo. The two of them have been hosting their weekly “From The Red Couch” shows since COVID began, and each week is a real treat.
Tonight we talk about how COVID has been treating them, writing and performing, and what stories mean to them. I really love interviewing songwriters; they always dig deeper to tell the more meaningful story. I think you’ll agree.
weekends in November. I have attended many times and can attest to how amazing this show is. Go to the site and poke around. Seriously, go see this show!!!
Kate is performing later in November at Amado’s in the Mission, Sunday, November 21st.
OK, that’s enough. Take a look at the playlist below, click the link at the top to stream or download this show, by tickets to the live shows, and get a damn life already.
Enjoy.

Sometimes the week just gets away from me. I really need to be more on top of this blog. For this I apologize. And look what you missed!!! Scarrrrrry soundzzzzzzz. Not really. Kinda. I really didn’t put much effort into the holiday theme, most likely because it’s a week away, and I’m really trying to avoid making a costume of any kind. What the hell is wrong with me? I used to love to do the whole DIY thing. I did make my toddler son’s costume. Bodhi wants to be a blueberry. There are no blueberry costumes out there to be purchased, so I did what any modern day, creative father would do: I hit up the craft store!
He wants me to be a strawberry. This is not going to happen. He wants his mother to be a banana. This too is not going to happen. He wants his sister, Little Lauson Hell, to be an elephant. This really isn’t going to happen. He’ll forget all about it once he gets a candy bar thrown his way.
I am totally off topic.
This show was fun nonetheless. I realized following the show I should have played the Tom Waits tune “What’s He Building In There?”, instead of what I did play. In retrospect I have creepy music galore that I didn’t play. I did pull out some horror film soundtracks, and a few treats. There is some new music from the Melvins and Kate Vargas. I also picked up the 50th anniversary Beatles “Let It Be” box set. I played a few selections from those sessions in the second hour.
I just picked up the entire Pink Floyd 2021 remastered collection. There are no extras, but it sounds amazing! Next Monday you may hear some of this.
If you’re heading out on the town Sunday for Halloween, save some to the treats for the kids, will ya? My wife and I had this idea years ago, to serve creamed corn from ladles into the candy bags. Hilarious. Maybe one day? HA!

Tune in for the music, stay for my stinging commentary on commercial radio! Seriously though, you can’t write this stuff. Live 105 is now Dave FM? Too much. Let’s turn commercial radio into a ghost town. To me this looks like the death knell of the medium. What a perfect time for people to tune into non-commercial, and community radio like Radio Valencia, where the DJs all curate their own shows. There is nothing holding us back. We aren’t relying on corporate interests. Our motive is our purpose.
As always, a lot of new music on this show. including new acoustic Melvins, new King Gizzard, FUZZ, Shannon and the Clams. I’m also starting a second hour feature where I showcase my box set collections. There are always sonic treats in these sets that you’ve never heard before. I’ll be sharing what I’ve got weekly.
Enjoy.

Well this is embarrassing. I should have shared this with you days ago. What was I thinking? What have I been doing all this time? Oh right, I have kids, and a wife. And it was my birthday this past week, so there was that. And I have a job.
I just can’t please ’em all.
And this was a really good show; possibly the best since I returned live in the studio this past summer. New music from Ty Segall,Shannon and the Clams, King Gizzard and John Dwyer. There’s also a tribute to sax man, Pee Wee Ellis. I saw some live music last weekend and went digging online for the opening bands. I open with tunes from both, Buzzed Lightbeer and Coffin. Check them out when they come to your town.
Support live, local music.
Enjoy.

Music and mayhem for two hours. You’re good with that, right? I really had no chance, btw. I have to keep up appearances. I really listen to Helen Reddy and Montovani at home. You knew that though. You’re smart like that. I’m boring as all get out. Dad jokes a-plenty! I plug my ears through all this music you hear during my show. Blech. Who needs it? amiright?????
And then there’s the guests! Sheesh! Who the Hell wants to talk to people? I really just want to sink into my comfy couch, eat some bon-bons and watch train videos on YouTube.
First hour is some stuff, follower by things. Ha! New music from Red Fang, Toshi Kasai and Daddy Longhead. Such goodness coming from these artists. I’m looking forward to interviewing producer, engineer, electronics wiz Toshi Kasai in the upcoming weeks.
Second hour brings a visit from the one and only Mike Dingle of the 3rd Thursday Band, and Marlon Kasberg of KFJC (I won’t share his airname, but you will know him when you hear him). They stopped in to talk up this weekend hullabaloo happening at Winters Tavern in Pacific, Saturday and Sunday, featuring a tribute to the late. great rock/punk saxophonist Steve Mackay. The interview was fun and way too much roommate radio, but silly nonetheless.
There’s also some great music featuring Steve Mackay late in the second hour.
If you really want to give a listen to what a bunch of idiots who have known one another for 20+ years in and around the music and radio history, forgetting that they’re on the radio, and ignoring the listeners, then you really want to give this a lesson. To be honest though, Marlon and I did our best to keep Dingle on point, and talking directly into the microphone. I love that guy.
Come to this show!
Enjoy.

It has been almost two full years since I have hosted a guest in the studio. Monday night I was pleased to have Patsy and Giovanni “The Cleaner” mAcdonald, from the greatest rock and roll band in the world, Shake Well, join me in the second hour, talking up their new release and upcoming show at Ivy Room, Thursday night, September 16th, featuring TJ mAcdonald, who sounds a lot like Eric McFadden, on guitar. Eric and Kate Vargas are headlining this show.
The mAcdonald family are a curious bunch, and Patsy shares some stories I don’t think the rest of the family are too keen on you all knowing. Be sure to check out the interview. They also brought along some tracks for the soon-to-be-released new album. There’s plenty of new music throughout the show tonight. Amyl and the Sniffers, Toshi Kasai, Paul Leary, Kate Vargas, Meatbodies, and Negativland. Whew, that’s a lot.

Another Monday, another chance for me to share some great music with you all. I started in radio in the Fall of 1988, when I was at the College of San Mateo and took radio classes, so I could be at KCSM, Jazz-91 on the campus. I was also working at Tower Records in San Mateo at the time. One of my colleagues was a DJ near the South Bay at 89.7FM KFJC, located at Foothill Junior College, just south of Stanford. When she heard I was at KCSM, she told me I should come down to KFJC and check it out. I was floored; I thought of KFJC as an exclusive station, with the cream of the crop of subversive DJs, always pushing the limits of what was “acceptable” radio. I first showed up there in late Fall 1988, and stuck around until 1997.
KFJC taught me that I had a responsibility to push the limits. Where else are you going to be turned onto music that will captivate and elevate you to a higher consciousness? Indeed.
So tonight you’re going to get what I always give you: good musical medicine. Tribute to Lee “Scratch” Perry; new Ty Segall and Meatbodies; krautrock from Embryo; kraut-influenced from MV and EE; birthday wishes to Roger Waters and much much more,
I’ve been doing this radio thing for over 30 years now, but it still feels fresh every week. I love finding new music, or music that’s new to me, so I can share it all with you. I hope you enjoy this recent presentation.
Enjoy.

Serving up some hot platters for your brain matter.
Seriously though, there are some good eats for your ears on this here show. Give it spin…or a stream. You can download it to go! Who knows, maybe you’re listening to this show in the distant future, floating through space, far from our galaxy. Good on ya! Do you still consider yourself human, even if you don’t live on planet Earth anymore?
I’ve been reading the “Three-Body Problem“, by Cixin Liu, and that question comes up throughout the trilogy.
As for this here show, it’s an interesting one. I’m training a new host, DJ Collin, who’s going to be starting his new show Friday’s 6-8PM Pacific, “Digging with DJ Collin“. The second half of this show features a lot of his selections. I really put him to the test tonight. There were so many tech issues, even I was getting a bit flustered. He was chill the whole way through, and really gave his best. I can’t wait to tune in to his show! Our new home is really attracting some great talent. Please take the time to tune in regularly throughout the week. You never know when your next favorite host will knock you off your feet.
Take a look at the playlist below, click on the link at the top to stream or download this baby, and enjoy your trip through the cosmos.

I just bet I can multitask with the best of them. And when I say I can multitask, what I mean is I can’t. And neither can you. Really, you can’t, so stop putting on your resume as a skill. I was training a new DJ on Monday night, which takes some real direct attention. You need to be present if you’re showing a new host how the system works, as well as the Radio Valencia philosophy. I don’t want to play all ten minute songs throughout my show, so the training was happening in fits and starts. I think if you are paying attention you can hear the fits. ugh.
Some of the segues are less than pristine. I’m not proud.
I am however proud of the music I chose tonight. Brand spankin’ new music from Butthole Surfers/Melvins bassist Jeff Pinkus and Daddy Longhead. Also new music from Black Midi, David McMurray, and Henry Kaiser. There’s also a tribute to ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill who passed away unexpectedly last week following a short illness.
If you’re into ZZ Top (and who isn’t???) then be sure to check out my two hour Live Bootleg Bonanza tribute from Monday night. It’s two complete shows from 1980 and 1983.
Check out the playlist below for all the treats, and ignore the DJ error as I was training the next great Radio Valencia DJ.
I thank you in advance.

I cannot express to you the amount of joy I feel when my daughter, Lauson joins me in the studio. She first joined me when she was 7, now she’s getting close to 17, and she’s more lovely, funny, creative, and charismatic than ever. And her taste in music is as exciting as ever. I’m glad she’s still into the Beatles, but the fact that she’s turning me on to great music tells me I’m raising her right!
We kept the banter to a minimum, but the chat is as lively as the music. I tagged her choices with an “L”.
Many people have asked me how she got her name? About 3-4 years before she was conceived, I had a dream where I was sitting in the back seat, passenger side, of my 1984 burgundy Olds Cutless Supreme. There was a seven year old girl in the front passenger seat, turned around looking at me. She had wild curly in the dream. I asked her name, and she said “Lauson. L.A.U.S.O.N.”. She then appeared next to me on my left, with my arm around her. She was smiling at me, and I knew at that moment I was looking at my daughter.
I woke up and looked at my wife (now my ex-wife), and said “we’re going to have a daughter named Lauson, L.A.U.S.O.N.”. She replied “we’re having kids?”. That tells you all you need to know about my ex-wife. A few years later Lauson was born. We chose not to know the sex of the baby before delivery, but I knew it was going to be Lauson. Seven years later, it was that same face, that same curly hair, and that same beautiful smile that I cannot get enough of.
Her mother and I divorced when she was only two, sadly. And for too many years Lauson had to go back and forth between houses. But she has been with me, 100% for the past three. We’re thick as thieves, she and I. I love that girl from the bottom of my heart. And I am so proud of who she is, heading into her senior year of high school. Time certainly does fly by.
Luckily I have every show Lauson has joined me on. You can access each of them by clicking on the links below. Check out the playlists to see how her interests have evolved.
