Hello fellow Alchemists and Confluxians. Happy New Year! Yes, each new year brings with it the promise of renewal that is only matched by spring training baseball in a warm climate, but that is subject for another day.
A couple announcements to get to before we get into the meat of this week’s shows. I have a new Facebook identity as The Alchemist. There is also a new group Friends of the Alchemist where I am posting the activities of this show and encouraging open discussion of what you, the listening audience, want more of out my weekly expose. So, please, don’t be shy, drop a dime if you’re old enough to remember what that means, or text me bro if not.
I also have an Instagram page @ riseofalchemist. I’m not a person who enjoys social media for it’s own sake, but I do recognize the need to be present on the medium when promoting a show and gathering listeners. So, if you do use that format, please follow me.
During the last week of the year, we did a couple of shows co-sponsoring Flipper @ Bottom of the Hill in SF. These shows were a very important in that they bolstered our relationship with Bottom of the Hill, and as a result will continue to co-sponsor shows at this classic SF concert venue.
On Friday, January 21st Hellbilly rockers, The Supersuckers will be performing with Scott H. Biram and HeWhoCannotBeNamed. DJ Ace from Ace’s Space (Saturdays from 4-6pm) and DJ Malderor from Malderor’s Curated Catastrophe (Sunday’s from 2-4pm) will be manning our table and representing Radio Valencia and selling our T-Shirts.
On Friday, January 28th The Blasters will be performing with opening acts Thee Merry Widows and Sid Presley. DJ’s Skeevy and Johnny from the Skeevy Side Show (Wednesday’s from 8-10pm) will be manning our table. I want thank the again for guest hosting my show last week while I was out. At some point in the near future, I will be repaying that by taking over the Skeevy Side Show and doing a four hour set of my own…..TBD…..but in the meantime, put this on your calendar for a busy weekend to hit up a couple shows, because the very next day….
On Saturday, January 29th, Dr. Madd Vibe & the Missing Links (Angelo Moore of Fishbone) with local guitar legend Eric McFadden and special guest Dizzy Twin will be running amok at Bottom of the Hill. I will be there along DJ Uncle Ray from Uncle Ray’s Psychedelic Soul (Monday’s from 2-4pm) will be repping Radio Valencia. Also, and any of these shows, John Hell, who has arranged all of these events with Bottom the Hill, and hosts two shows on Mondays (John Hell’s Bootleg Bonanza from 6-8pm and Hell’s Kitchen from 8-12pm) could pop up at any or all of these events. Thank you, John Hell, again for all that you do to keep this station going.
Now, back to this week’s show. I began thinking of the content for this week’s show I started reflecting on the nature of New Year’s Day and what I am thinking about as I begin my new year. I had the image of a Phoenix Rising from the Ashes. A chance to let die the old self and the previous year to be reborn as imagined and be refreshed by the New Year. This doesn’t literally happen, but in some ways our intents do forge a portion of ourselves that drives our action and permeates our attitude. For me, I decided that I am focusing on Love this year. Loving those close to me more deeply, loving myself as I so often don’t and being open and loving even to those who I cannot see eye to eye with. So that is what a great deal of this week’s show entails….and now…without further ado….the setlist.

What an honor it was to host the drummer of one of the most influential bands in a generation (or three), Stephen DePace of Flipper! I’ve interviewed Ted Falcone and Rachel Thoele back in 2019, in preparation for Flipper’s 40th anniversary, and this time around Stephen came in to talk up the Radio Valencia co-presents at Bottom of the Hill on December 30th and New Year’s Eve!
What started as an interview, quickly became a Flipper retrospective, as Stephen brought all of their releases with him (of which I had all of them of course), and told some brilliant stories about each track.
Really, this is a must listen show for all of you aging punk rockers, and Flipper fans. Even you youngsters should check this out to add to your punk street cred. Ha!
Radio Valencia will have a merch table with brand new RV t-shirts for sale, $15-$20 sliding scale donation.
Bottom of the Hill has a strict COVID protocol. You must show your vaccination card upon entry, and anyone seen with their mask off (other than for drink or food), will be told to leave. No exceptions!
Go to Bottom of the Hill for tickets and info. We can’t wait to ring in the new year with Flipper and YOU!
Enjoy.

Hello my fellow Alchemites and Confluxians. Winter has been coming for a long time and YES>>>>>>It is here. So grab a nog, a slog, some grog or a local hog, and let’s celebrate all that is cold with some winter songs and good company to warm our hearts. This is the time of year to remind ourselves of our commonality and celebrate our differences. So don’t be generic in your holiday greetings. Here’s how it works. If you celebrate Christmas and you are greeting someone who celebrates Chanakkah…….say Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukkah, and the other responds Happy Chanukkah and Merry Christmas….this way you acknowledge your own beliefs and theirs as well. Same goes if you don’t know….you offer yours, they offer theirs and you acknowledge both. All beliefs are valid even if your belief is I don’t believe……so…enough of my soapbox….here’s the set list. Happy Christosolstifestikwanzikkahus…..and a Jim Neighbors too.
One last thing. Next week my show will be hosted by Skeevy. They have a great four hour show for you, so check in early at 8pm on 12/29/2021.

Back in England in days gone by before TV, people would sit around the radio on Boxing Day and listen to a musical or a radio theatrical production. In honor of that past tradition I present a special episode of #TheStrandedPlaylist from 10/12/2017. We played the classic musical adaptation of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds in it’s entirety.
An incredible audio retelling the story of The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. Released almost 40 years ago on September 6, 1978.A concept album, its main format is progressive rock and string orchestra, using narration (by the late actor Richard Burton) and leitmotifs to carry the story via rhyming melodic lyrics that express the feelings of the various characters portrayed in this incredible musical re-imagining of the classic science fiction story about a Martian invasion in Victorian London!
The two-disc album remains a bestseller, having sold millions of records around the world!Following this presentation (at timecode 01:37:00) I spun new #remixes of some amazing #Billboard Dance charting hit songs from then!

I was just in a mood, I guess. It is the holiday I suppose. I don’t have seasonal affective disorder, or any disorder I care to blather on about, as far as I or my therapist knows. I will say that I am daddy-daycare for the next two weeks, since my bride be working, and that is enough to make someone run to the hills, regardless of how much you love the little tyke.
I don’t think I was paying attention to the upcoming holiday until the morning of this show. I did not plan on doing anything special for this particular program, yet I do have a collection of music set for just such an occasion. I wasn’t going to leave you hanging.
If you listen to me talk, it sounds like I’m blathering (there’s that word again?) on and on about something that sounds important…to me. And you know what, it was…at the time. Feel free to comment on whatever floats your boat. Flies your kite. Walks your dog. Jerks your chain. You keep it going now.
There are some delightful alternate takes from box sets and deluxe editions thrown in, as usual. I went record shopping last week, so there are some items thrown in I was excited to get. “New” music from Art Blakey, The Bobby Lees, EXEK, Mike Krol, and new John Dwyer. I also shared a real treat that my buddy, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and all around fine fella, Mark Growden, shared with me from French singer/songwriter Alain Bashung. There are very few people that I trust to offer a tune that I know I can blindly throw into a set. This one worked just fine. Welcome to this very exclusive club, Mark.
That being said, my father raised me to be extremely inclusive. His advice: invite everyone to the party. Allow them to decline.
I will always invite you all to this Monday night party.
Next Monday, December 27th, I’m excited to have Flipper drummer, Steve Depace in the studio talking up the December 30 and New Years Eve shows, Radio Valencia is co-presenting at Bottom of the Hill. Make sure to get your tickets fast. They are going to sell out, and it’s going to be a blast!
Enjoy and please share.

Hello fellow Alchemists and Confluxians: My apologies for the delay in posting this blog. Life has been a bit hectic. Missed a week after this show and am just now getting around to posting a blog, although I did put the show up a couple weeks back for the podcast.
This show is a trip to a dive bar on the dusty edge of nowhere. More of a feeling than a place….you know the feeling; you know the place.
Sit back and let the darkness envelope you as you drift into a dangerous place where strangers are sizing you up for a good way to use you, but not before you use them first.
