You have distinguished taste in music. You only want the best. So why are you here? Just joking; I got what you need.
Often times I pull my music shortly before I leave for the station, looking for albums that I either recently purchased, or something I haven’t listened to in a long time. There are also times I pull records that I haven’t listen to quite enough, and figure I’ll try out a track on you. That being said, these records rarely get played on my show. I don’t really want to experiment on you that much. That wouldn’t be fair. You want to tune into a show where the host actually has done the work for you.
I’ve trained countless DJs over the years. Though I impart upon them my style of programming, it’s important that they find their own voice, as I did. Starting my radio life at the great KFJC (88-97), I was trained by Hell’n Hairspray, who shared her own wisdom about mixing accessible tunes with more challenging tracks. There were two school’s of thought at the Fine 89: Mix it up so as not to alienate the listener, and push the limits 100% of the time, listeners-be-damned! I come from the former school. I like to push the limits from time to time, but I also don’t want you all running for the hills, or to Dave-FM. HA!
On this show you get a mixed bag of sonic goodness. It’s the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s fourth release (untitled), I throw in a version of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” that you have never heard before, some folk blues from the deep south, Japanese psych, Detroit proto-punk, West Kenyan Guitar, Aussie garage rock, Detroit blues, and The Residents, along with many other tasty treats, fresh from Hell’s Kitchen Radio.

This was the toughest show we’ve ever had to do. We lost our very good friend, Doug Powell, far too soon earlier this month. His kids have been guest DJs on Radio Valencia in the past and the ESBeats family is still in shock from the sudden loss. Doug was a huge lover of music. A devoted Dead Head and an amazing drummer in his own right (he even gave DJ Addimae her first electronic drum set earlier this year).
We managed to rally and pull together two hours of music dedicated to the man himself. Fare thee well, Doug. You will be missed but never forgotten.
You can learn more about Doug here… and how you can help the family here.
For now, sit back and close your eyes and remember Doug through music.

After careful consideration, and a close listen to my pre-Halloween show, I came to the decision that it just plane blew. Therefore, I have made the executive decision for a do-over. The first hour on Monday night was some sweet spooky tunes to keep the holiday spirit going. Pun intended.
To make this night even better, the second hour features not one, but two remarkable performers: Kate Vargas and Eric McFadden. If you have tuned into my show over the years, then you know Eric is a longtime friend, and always a great interview, always with fun stories to share. Tonight Eric is joined by singer/songwriter Kate Vargas. I’ve been playing the hell out of her recent release, Rumpumpo. The two of them have been hosting their weekly “From The Red Couch” shows since COVID began, and each week is a real treat.
Tonight we talk about how COVID has been treating them, writing and performing, and what stories mean to them. I really love interviewing songwriters; they always dig deeper to tell the more meaningful story. I think you’ll agree.
weekends in November. I have attended many times and can attest to how amazing this show is. Go to the site and poke around. Seriously, go see this show!!!
Kate is performing later in November at Amado’s in the Mission, Sunday, November 21st.
OK, that’s enough. Take a look at the playlist below, click the link at the top to stream or download this show, by tickets to the live shows, and get a damn life already.
Enjoy.

Hello fellow Alchemists and Confluxians. Tonight we honor one of my favorite musicians, Steven Wilson. He is often referred to as the greatest musician you’ve never heard of. And as deep as my library was, I had never heard of his music…..until…….
About 7 years ago, I discovered Porcupine Tree (Deadwing to be specific) which I shortly followed up with by grabbing In Absentia and thus a rabbit hole I had fallen into. I had no idea at the time how many burrows I would find or just how deep it went, but I just kept following wherever they lead. What I found was a kindred spirit in that musical “categories” mean almost nothing and that there is no reason not mash them us, depart from one to do another, or just let them rest side by side as if they always belonged together. This is essentially the crux of what I try to bring to you each week and Steven Wilson’s musical catalog, as immense and diverse as it is, is a representation of that. Sadly, in a two hour window there just isn’t enough time to do a deep dive, so I strove to just show you the portal entryways to which a rabbit might seek adventure. So……, Without further ado, in honor and celebration of Steven Wilson, I bring you a small guide to where the rabbit holes are and a small taste of what lies beyond each door.

Happy Halloween my fiendish Alchemites and Confluxians. Welcome to this hellish sound collage from deep within the abyss. Please feel free to stream this while your trick or treater darken your doorway, or if you are hosting a haunted house. Though the content will feel and sound disturbing and vile, there is no need to fear that you are broadcasting profanity into your neighborhood as I was careful not to include some of things vulgarity that does appear in some of the movie sound sources I used, like the Exorcist. That being said, it is very dark and will leave a chill in your bones and even frighten those who do not steep themselves in the world of horror as I enjoy doing.
Thank you for listening to my show, or podcast after the fact. I appreciate your support.
