Mindtrain 14 – 01 November 2011

November 1, 2011
12:30 pm

I’ve been planning this show for months now, pulling albums and tracks from my library of dark and disturbing music and adding them to an enormous playlist in iTunes. This past week I went through that playlist, weeding out many selections and keeping only the darkest and scariest examples of spooktacular music from many of my favorite artists.

The early recordings of Current 93 have always sounded extremely demonic and malevolent to my ears, and tracks from these albums took up a lot of the program, including many of the remixed versions which Andrew Liles released (issuing remixed versions of five entire albums between 2008 and 2009). Other artists from that post-Industrial milieu whose work fit into the ‘Dark 80s’ vein included (inevitably) Coil, Diamanda Galas and Lustmord. The disturbingly dark Rock In Opposition neo-medieval chamber music of Belgium’s Univers Zero figured prominently in the program as well as one of Magma’s most hellish selections. And finally I sprinkled in some more recent recordings from the 90s and 00s by Boyd Rice And Fiends, Apoptose, John Watermann and a few others. There was so much scary music to draw from in my collection I could have easily done a 12-hour special, but I think the concentrated assortment found herein will suffice.

Ferrara’s Haunted Jukebox – 27 October 2011

October 28, 2011
1:22 am

This week’s Thursday Night Wildcard slot served as a special Halloween edition of Ferrara’s Enchanted Jukebox, featuring two hours of dark and morbid, evil, scary music from my own extensive library of industrial, dark ambient and experimental recordings. This was but a teaser for the four-hour Halloween edition of Mindtrain which airs next Monday night at midnight. Included were choice selections by Lustmord, Coil, Diamanda Galas, Current 93, Univers Zero and others.

I’ve always had a special preference for all kinds of dark music, so it was a real pleasure to search through my entire music library to find the most creepy and disturbing tracks by many of my longtime favorite artists. Hopefully some of you will want to download the podcast and archive it for future listening whenever you’re in the mood for something scary…

Mindtrain 13 – 25 October 2011

October 25, 2011
4:39 am

This week’s edition of Mindtrain was devoted exclusively to ‘outside’ jazz recordings of the 1960s and 70s, with an emphasis on music by Gunter Hampel and artists in his circle, most notably Marion Brown, Anthony Braxton and Jeanne Lee (Hampel’s wife until her death in 2000). Many of the tracks I played were drawn from vinyl releases on Hampel’s own Birth Records label, most of which have been to this date unreleased on CD. One of these albums (featured here in its entirety) was Familie, a live concert recording documenting a totally improvised performance by Braxton, Hampel & Lee from 1972, recorded at the Theatre de Mouffetard in Paris on April 1 of that year.

Other artists whose work I chose to include on the program included Eric Dolphy (whose brief recorded legacy cast a huge influence on the jazz avant-garde across the decades following his premature demise in 1964), Archie Shepp and Patty Waters. Jazz is a genre I don’t give enough attention to on Mindtrain, and hopefully this program somewhat served to make up for that fact.

It bears mention that my first exposure to this music (free improvisation, avant-garde jazz or what you care to call it) was in the 1970s as a teenager growing up in Southeastern Massachusetts. Many nights I stayed up listening to late-night college radio on headphones, and it was on stations such as WBUR (Boston University), WBRS (Brandeis) and WBRU (Brown University in Providence, RI), that I was introduced to the recordings of Gunter Hampel, Marion Brown, Sun Ra and other forward-thinking jazz artists. Hopefully this edition of Mindtrain can serve to expose a handful of today’s listeners to this great music.

Mindtrain 12 – 18 October 2011

October 18, 2011
4:43 am

As I’m typing this blog entry, I’m listening to some amazing music by Gunter Hampel, ripped from out-of-print LPs released during the 60s and 70s and recently downloaded to my computer. This is some truly inspired free jazz, featuring the likes of Jeanne Lee and Marion Brown along with multi-instrumentalist Hampel, and I’ll definitely be playing some of this fine, hard-to-find-or-define music on my program next week.

This week’s show tended toward mostly somber and contemplative contemporary classical, ECM label third-stream jazz, and dark electronic/symphonic pop and ballads, except for some more raucous sounds from Cindytalk and our own Ure Thrall (aka Doktor Sleepless of the Interstellar Nihilism late-night program) toward the end of the show. And because I was pressed for time in putting together the music for tonight’s program (having recently started a full-time temp day job), I played a number of long pieces or song suites from the likes of Jonathan Bepler, Nurse With Wound, and Agnes Buen Garnas with Jan Garbarek.

The longest piece I played was an entire one-hour drone work from a CD collaboration by Finnish hard-edge post-Industrial analog electronic duo Pan Sonic and legendary NYC shamanic minimalist Charlemagne Palestine, released in the year 2000 as part of the limited edition Mort Aux Vaches series of Dutch radio broadcasts of contemporary experimental composers and musicians. Regular listeners of Mindtrain know by now that I’m a big fan of the drone school of minimalism, as I’ve featured long works by La Monte Young, Catherine Christer Hennix, Black To Comm and others on past programs. This untitled work by Pan Sonic and Palestine is a monolithic aural entity, building in harmonic density and volume over the long steady course of the recording. Essential stuff, seldom heard and long out-of-print.

And be sure to tune in next week for some psychically liberating free jazz from Gunter Hampel and company…

Mindtrain 11 – 11 October 2011

October 11, 2011
5:16 am

The featured release this week was Miraculous Mechanical Monster by Andrew Liles, concluding (for the time being, at least) my ongoing presentation of recordings from his richly diverse Monstrous series. This LP is the triumphant eruption of a sickly twisted and demented mind, as depraved as (and much funnier than) anything Frank Zappa ever put out. Thanks to Doktor Sleepless of the Interstellar Nihilism show for exposing me to this record (sick minds think alike, heh).

Other highlights of the program included C, a relatively early composition by Ryoji Ikeda (in ten parts), Vinny Golia’s music for contrabass saxophone, a couple long selections from the exemplary German dark ambient artist Apoptose, classic tracks by King Crimson and Alice Cooper, and songs from the Auricular Audio Magazine compilation series.

Drinks With Ferrara 02 – 05 October 2011

October 5, 2011
9:51 pm

I love filling in for Tony Dushane in this time slot, and it’s been a while since my last sub on Drinks With Tony. This is the second round of Drinks With Ferrara, and my programming sensibility leans toward old-school punk, psychedelia and easy listening, with heavy helpings of weirdness and musical derangement for the cocktail hour.

Tonight I led off with a rare BBC recording by perennial faves the Bonzo Dog Band, followed by a set that featured new tracks by Zola Jesus and John Cale amid stretches of post-punk, pop and experimental sounds. The new John Cale five-track EP is a far cry from the classic records of his early career, but good enough to make me look forward to the full-length CD that can’t be far off. The new Zola Jesus album Conatus is great though, a step forward in the direction of the previous CD. I’m excited about her upcoming gig at the Independent next month, having missed her recent visits to the Milk Bar and the Rickshaw Stop.

Then there was some locally produced music from saxophonist David Slusser and Edmund Welles, the world’s only heavy metal bass clarinet quartet. The Slusser recording is a few years old now, and it features Ralph Carney adding additional wind prowess to the tunes. The Edmund Welles track is from their latest CD Imagination Lost, the third one to come from this amazing foursome of fearsomely talented players.

This was a fun show, and I think you’ll enjoy the podcast (especially since we got the kinks all ironed out with regard to the audio problems with the live stream). I love butting the Last Poets up against Ol’ Blue Eyes, and sticking Jackie Gleason in the same set with the Virgin Prunes!

Mindtrain 10 – 04 October 2011

October 4, 2011
4:44 am

This week on Mindtrain I opened the show with a lovely acoustic song by Mia Doi Todd from her CD Zeroone, a fine release I happened upon at the thrift store where I worked last winter. That was followed by a set dedicated to our beleaguered and beloved planet Earth, including one great long piece by Pharoah Sanders and Leon Thomas, and a cult classic by David Axelrod: Earth Rot (as timely today as when it was released back in 1970).

There was quite a bit of synth-based post-punk / post-industrial / new wave stuff in the show, and more of those fabulous Monstrous recordings that Andrew Liles has been putting out since last year. The last hour of the program featured an archival recording of a work in Just Intonation by microtonal composer Catherine Christer Hennix, The Electric Harpsichord – a hypnotic drone-based Minimalist masterpiece in the tradition of La Monte Young, recorded in 1976 but not released till 2010, in an expensive edition by Die Schachtel.

Please Note: We’ve been having technical issues with our live stream here at Radio Valencia during the past week. You may hear some intermittent signal dropouts during the first thirty minutes of the podcast for this show, but the rest of the program should sound fine.

Ferrara’s Enchanted Jukebox 06 – 03 October 2011

October 3, 2011
3:54 am

Tonight’s midnight edition of Ferrara’s Enchanted Jukebox was hastily thrown together at the last minute, as I decided to go into the studio and test out the new mixing board which got installed today. Things weren’t all connected like I thought they’d be, so there were a couple embarrassing minutes of dead air at the outset, as well as some distortion in the signal due to the very hot preamps in the channel strips of our new board (which will take some getting used to). Hopefully it didn’t sound too bad for the handful of listeners out there.

I played some stuff tonight by my friend Robert Turman, who put out a CD a couple years ago with Aaron Dilloway entitled Blizzard. Robert and I played together with Boyd Rice in an early trio during the late 1970s. After I dropped out, the group became NON and Robert stayed on for one or two records before NON became Boyd’s long-running solo project. I also played a long track by 400 Lonely Things, another friend’s project which I featured a couple weeks back on my regular show Mindtrain. And then there was some Cindytalk, Amon Duul II, and a mindbendingly hypnotic cover of a Spacemen 3 song by Bowery Electric.

Mindtrain 09 – 27 September 2011

October 2, 2011
3:15 pm

This week I decided to feature The Conet Project in its entirety – That’s four CDs of recordings of shortwave numbers stations (totaling four hours and forty-five minutes), without interruption. You can read more about this extraordinary audio document here and here.

The fact of the matter is that I’ve been very sick with a head cold, and consequently I simply didn’t feel up to doing a regular show with four hours of assorted selections, coughing and sneezing over the air during track announcements. Next week I will return to the usual eclectic variety of music that I like to present on the program.
