No Such Program 2.8.1 – The Well-Tuned Piano – 10 May 2012
Thursday, May 10
10am
A special 25th anniversary broadcast of The Well-Tuned Piano In The Magenta Lights,
the complete and uninterrupted six-and-one-half hour concert recording,
composed and performed by La Monte Young.
This past Thursday marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of La Monte Young’s 87 V 10 performance of The Well-Tuned Piano. Regarded as the composer’s magnum opus and arguably one of the most definitive and groundbreaking compositions of the 20th Century, this solo work for the Bosendorfer Imperial Grand piano (specifically tuned to Young’s harmonic system of just intonation) is a majestic and transcendent masterpiece which few have heard, owing to its monumental duration and the relative scarcity of the two officially released recordings of its performances (a five-CD box set of an earlier performance from 1981 was issued on the Gramavision label in 1987).
This special edition of No Such Program featured the entire six-and-one-half hour audio track from the very limited DVD edition, The Well-Tuned Piano In The Magenta Lights, recorded on May 10, 1987 and released in the year 2000 on the composer’s Just Dreams label.
