John Hell was nice enough to have me sit in HIS SLOT, Hell's Kitchen Radio (Monday nights, 8-10) as I have been "on hiatus" from weekly radio since Jan 1. I couldn't pass up the chance to celebrate the life and amazing career of the late great David Bowie, 1947-2016. Here's phase one, of I hope many all vinyl tribute to the master...

There is so much to say about The Residents and we try and do it ALL in two hours in this episode. Earlier this year, a new film about The Residents, THEORY OF OBSCURITY, made it’s world premiere at South By Southwest and is about to come out theatrically and VOD very soon. Long time Residents spokesman, manager and Cryptic Corporation co-founder, Homer Flynn, along with Theory Of Obscurity director, Don Hardy, joined a very nervous DJ Jim G in conversation and music! Homer had personally handpicked some choice cuts which were largely influential on The Residents themselves and we also debut a new Residents demo that may (or may not) appear on a forthcoming “blues” album.

The Residents are an American art collective best known for avant-garde music and multimedia works. Since their first official release, Meet the Residents (1974), the group has released over sixty albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs. They have undertaken seven major world tours and scored multiple films. Pioneers in exploring the potential of CD-ROM and similar technologies, the Residents have won several awards for their multimedia projects. Ralph Records, a record label focusing on avant-garde music, was started by the band.

Throughout the group’s existence, the individual members have ostensibly attempted to operate under anonymity, preferring instead to have attention focused on their art output. Much outside speculation and rumor has focused on this aspect of the group. In public, the group appears silent and costumed, often wearing eyeball helmets, top hats and tuxedos—a long-lasting costume now recognized as its signature iconography.

San Francisco singer/songwriter Sarah Bethe Nelson (formerly of Prairie Dog) and rawk drummer pro Mike Shoun (Thee Oh Sees, Peacers, SBN) drop in and celebrate our fantastic Bay Area scene with a heaping sliver of sweet tastes for your ears. They also throw in a couple of older, essential influences to round out this family style "mix tape." Folks, DJ Jim G is doing things a little differently for this episode. The show is split into two for TWO AMAZING GUESTS: Filmmaker Harrod Blank and post-punk guitar legend Roger Miller!

For the first half, Harrod Blank discusses his recent travels and trials with legendary musician Leon Russell and the film, A POEM IS A NAKED PERSON, made by Harrod’s father, the late, great Les Blank. “POEM” was completed more than 40 years ago and then went unreleased due to conflicts over its creative license between Russell and Blank. Just before Les passed away in 2013, he had asked Harrod to find a way in resurrecting the film and reconnecting with Leon. Les’ wish had been fulfilled and a lost classic film is on the screen for the first time to rave reviews around the world.

Roger Miller joins us in the second half discussing his musical prowess for nearly five decades. Best known as the groundbreaking guitarist and one of three lead singers in Mission Of Burma, Roger is also the keyboard player in Alloy Orchestra, a unique ensemble that performs its own accompaniments to silent films of the classic movie era. Alloy Orchestra has developed an extensive repertoire of music and sounds. Along with Miller’s keyboards, percussionists Terry Donahue and Ken Winokur use an array of found objects and electronics as well as traditional percussion instruments. We also get deep with several other Roger Miller projects, both past & present, so tune in!

San Francisco based DJ/photographer/writer/RAWK disciple Dave Pehling joins DJ Jim G for our second installment of Scene and Scored! Two hours of dedication toward classic and obscure film and TV soundtracks. We, more or less, pick up on where we last left it: YOU lying on the ground, breathing heavy, asking for more. Rocktober continues here in full effect as DJ Jim G sheds light on a nearly forgotten corner of his record collection, 7" EP's and singles from underground noise rock, grunge and "budget rock" bands (mostly ca. 1990-1995). A dent was barely made this time around, but the early 90's are alive and well here. Deeper excavating to continue...

Autumn aka Fall is in full effect here in the Bay Area. While that means full sunshiny days, seriously warm temps and not much change in leaf color, there is a chill that creeps in after a certain hour and a shift in our surroundings to let us know winter will be here before long. Whether you're a west coast native, mid-western/easterner transplant or from somewhere else, I bet Autumn will represent something lavish in your mind. Rocktober is our favorite month...

We here at W!C!P! are all about records. We like all kinds but, there’s something real special about the beloved 7″ or “45”. Back in the day, artists depended on singles to achieve their way to the top of the charts and later on independent artists relied on the 7″ format to sell at shows (inexpensively) to get their music into our hot little hands.

Every 7″ record has an “A” side that usually contains the “hit” or a song the artist obviously wants you to experience first. But sometimes on the “B” side is where things get interesting. Either labeled as “throwaways” or experimental recordings for particular artists, these tracks would sometimes become a hit themselves or be found deep on an album buried between other non hit songs; OR the assigned “B” side track just remained an orphan of sorts, existing solely beneath “A” territory.

Wax! Crackle! Pop! proudly presents a series, every blood moon (or so), where we exclusively investigate the other side, flipping it all over and that’s B SIDES THE POINT. We remembered with one of DJ Jim G's favorite Dead tunes. Also, a late nod to the recent passing of Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia), another ground-breaker whose influence is legendary. Several funky offerings make their way in (as they should) lighting and living up the joint. Get on top!

A week before they unleash the fury all over their Burger Boogaloo headline spot, Maz and Russell stopped by to spin some records and speak about the “budget rock” scene they helped build alongside numerous other DIY garage bands from the bay area. From humble beginnings that quickly blew up ending the 80’s with an insane sonic blast and charging into the new decade, leading a dedicated underground following that kicked off the 90’s revival garage punk rock movement worldwide.
