A Weekly Dive Into John Hell's Live Bootleg Library
John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - WAND (2018) & FUZZ (2021)
December 13, 2021 6:00pm
Back in about 2008 I stumbled across the Rollo and Grady, which I used to scour for new music to play on my show. They're out of LA and always have some incredible new sounds to explore. On one such search I came across a young garage punk phenom: Ty Segall. This was when he was still living and working in San Francisco, making a name for himself playing as often as possible, anywhere that he could plug in and bash around. I fell in love immediately. I bought everything of his I could find. I still do.
His first full length solo LP came out in 2008, but he had already released a bunch of singles, been on comps and been with the Traditional Fools and Epsilons. In 2012 he created FUZZ with long time collaborators Charles Mootheart (Ty Segall Band, CFM) and Chad Ubovich (Meatbodies, Mikal Cronin). Segall is on Drums in this band. This band rocks my world. Where Ty Segall has evolved from pure garage psych, through psychedelic, to punk and heavy metal, FUZZ is all about heavy metal and acid rock. Honestly it's so hard to pigeonhole, and who would want to do that anyway?
I could go on and on about my serious man-crush I have on Ty, but I'll let the music do the talking.
The first 40 minutes or so is from another great LA-area psych band, WAND. Corey Hansen and gang are well worth your time. This is a great show, albeit a short one from Pickathon, August 4, 2018, since I wanted to make way for FUZZ. Both of these recordings are excellent audience tapes. If you tune in regularly then you know I would never play you a subpar recording, especially an audience recording considering I have thousands of quality soundboards to share.
The FUZZ show is taken from the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles, October 10, 2021. That was just two months ago!!! Take a listen then come to the show Wednesday night at Great American Music Hall. As of Sunday night, tickets are still available.
***UPDATE*** Due to a member (or more than one) of the band having pneumonia, Wednesday night's FUZZ show has been postponed. Dang. I'm very disappointed. Now you MUST tune into my show Monday night to hear what you'll be missing.
Go buy everything you can from Ty Segall and WAND. It's all so delicious.
WAND Lineage: Church Audio CAFS > Church Audio 9100 preamp > iriver H340 (Rockbox 3.14) > Magix Audio & Music Lab Premium (EQ, ReaComp compression, and track splitting) > Trader's Little Helper (24/48 FLACs, FLAC fingerprints)
FUZZ lineage: SP-CMC-4U -> A10 -> Soundforge -> FLAC
