This week’s show features music from Gaby Moreno PLUS many other great female artists

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below:

Gaby Moreno is a singer/songwriter from Guatemala City, Guatemala who, reportedly, first encountered the blues during a family trip to New York at the age of 13 and has been enamored with it ever since.  The vintage sounds of classic blues, soul, and R&B were so alluring to Gaby in her youth that she practically taught herself English through reading and learning lyrics to the songs she loved.  In recent years, she has won the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, was nominated for an Emmy for co-writing the theme song to NBC’s Parks and Recreation, and has had her music featured in numerous shows including: Lincoln Heights, Ghost Whisperer, The Hills, and Off the Map.
On her album, Illustrated Songs, Gaby combines these influential sounds from her youth with Latin music from the same era and is backed by what sounds like a very talented band.  Whether through her soulful attitude on “Mess a Good Thing” or her sweet vocals on a track like “No Regrets”, Gaby Moreno’s vocal and songwriting talents navigate the junctions of language and genres effortlessly.  That is an accomplishment that is difficult to achieve, and I think that Gaby has the grace, the skill, and the range to make it big!

Don’t believe me?  Then judge for yourself.  Check out his special rendition of “Mess a Good Thing she did for Silent Killer Productions:
Now that we’re all in agreement here — Gaby Moreno’s new album, Illustrated Songs, is available for a limited time for only $5 on Amazon by clicking here.

Yellow Yesterday

4:30 pm

This week’s show features music from Mexican indie rockers Yellow Yesterday

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below:

I opened the show with “Corres Deprisa” by this week’s featured artist Yellow Yesterday which is the brainchild of DF muli-instramentalist and song-writer, Andrés Ibarra Rios.   I was originally impressed by his talent when I discovered his debut self titled EP a couple of years ago on Poni Republic

Their second album, appropriately titled #2, is a much more clean and complex sound that still maintains the lo-fi folk sound that I liked so much on his first album.

#2 can be downloaded for free on their Bandcamp:
I also played a great Yellow Yesterday cover of Richie Valen’s “Come on Let’s go” found on the Ritchie Valens tribute album by (New Weird America) which is the continuation of Mexi Net Label (The Poni Republic) and you can also get this entire album featuring Radio Coyote favorites like Piyama Party, Joe Volume, and Apache O’Raspi for free over at nwla.tv

Born in Santiago, Chile but really getting his musical start in Germany with the group Closer Musik and with his strong ties to Kompact records, Matias Aguayo has been making this genuinely original mix of house, techno, Colombian champeta and even what is now being called tribal harachero layered with his signature trippy vocals to create a sound like you’ve never heard before!

Check out the new single from his upcoming EP titled I Don’t Smoke to be released on Kompact June 6th

Also, check out the very cool video for Battles’ “Ice Cream” (ft. Matias Aguayo) taken from their forthcoming album, Gloss Drop, to be released June 7th.

Maluca

June 6, 2011
12:57 pm

This week’s Radio Coyote features the tropical punk/ghettotech music of Maluca.

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below:

Born in the Bronx to Dominican parents, Maluca’s ease of genre-hopping is representative the duality of growing up bi-culturally.  Influenced by the more tropical sounds of mambo, merengue, and bachata; as well as ’90s hip-hop, freestyle, and club music, Maluca has contravened the stereotypes of “Latin” music. The story goes that she was discovered a couple years ago by Diplo of the label Mad Decent at a karaoke bar — they worked together on her first single “El Tigeraso” (which I played a remix of last week) and since she’s been taking over!

2010’s China Food was easily one of my favorite recent mixtapes so if you haven’t yet checked it out, I strongly suggest you get it now over at MadDecent

Check out the very cool video for “El Tigeraso” below:

Helado Negro

May 31, 2011
2:37 pm

This week’s Radio Coyote features music by Helado Negro.

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below

In honor of the looming apocalypse I opened the show with “Adios Maldito Mundo” a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Goodbye Cruel World” by today’s featured artist, Helado Negro.

I followed that with another Helado Negro song, “Regresa“, from his new album Canta Lechuza — which is a great example of the rich juxtaposition of the old and new: blips, bleeps, distortion and echoes set against traditional sounding Latin vocals and acoustic instruments all filtered through subdued lo-fi electrostatic.  His label, Asthmatic Kitty, calls it Latin psyche-funk-folk; but truly, you have to hear it to understand.  Check out the video for “Regresa” below.

and you can download CantaLuchuza via his Bandcamp.

12:30 pm

This week’s Radio Coyote features music from Lido Pimienta PLUS music from the new Fonogramaticos Vol. 12 compilation.

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below

Lido Pimienta is a very talented Colombian singer/songwriter coming to us by way of Ontario whose new EP, Color, creates a beautiful world of rhythm and melody filled with an enthusiasm for life.

Part of the DIY Tiny Box Collective in Ontario, Lidos’ music attempts to unify through songs about respect and acceptance of other cultures often with a backdrop of politically charged protest sentiments interpreted through Colombian folklore.

Influenced by the sounds of Joy Division, Massive Attack, Radiohead, and Bjork as well as Café Tacuba, Plastilina Mosh, and a whole stew of Colombian cantaoras like Etelvina Maldonado and Petrona Martinez, her remarkable talent has attracted the eye of musicians like Julieta Venegas & Javiera Mena (who invited Lido to participate in her album Mena).

Lido Pimienta’s critically acclaimed 8-track Color EP is available for download through iTunes and also on vinyl through Ku De Ta.

Francois Peglau

10:47 am

On this week’s Radio Coyote we feature music from Francois Peglau and a whole lot more.

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below

Francois Peglau got his start in the Lima Indie scene as lead of Los Fucking Sombreros.
Since leaving Los Fucking Sombreros he has moved to London and started working on his solo musical works which is influenced by his Peruvian/French/Argentine heritage as well as a range of musical styles from the socially charged lyrics of Nueva Cancion to the self-depreciating lyrics of Elliot Smith mixed with hints of Beattlesque harmonies/melodies.

His new album The Imminent Failure of Francois Peglau is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums of the year, but luckily you don’t have to take my word for it because the entire 10-track album is currently available for free download on his Bandcamp.

El Medio

April 18, 2011
4:37 pm

This week’s show features music from Puerto Rican one man band El Medio plus new music by ChocQuibTown, Vicente Gallo, Bengala, and more.

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below

Leo Velazquez, better known as El Medio, is just one of the very talented members in Puerto Rican soundscape band, Balún, whose 2010 chiptune-influenced mini LP Memoria Textil was on the top of many “Best of” lists last year.  In his solo work, El Medio seems to focus on just that – solidarity.  His recent album El Fin del Sueno del Helicoptero Personal highlights his personal songwriting style with themes that reflect upon his past with an eye on the future.  When paired with the orchestral nuances shaped by his lo-fi home studio El Medio successfully creates an intermingling of acoustic instruments and analog synths that is beautifully intimate.
El Fin del Sueno del Helicoptero Personal is available for free download via Bandcamp and you can also stream the single “O futur O” below:
