Torreblanca’s new single Lobo

April 6, 2011
4:37 pm

Torreblanca is easily on my short-list of top new bands.  They’re set to release the new album Bella Época with production by Quique of Cafe Tacvba.

If their new single Lobo is the sign of things to come then I’m very excited for this debut.  Check out the new single, Lobo, courtesy of Me Hace Ruido below:

Y La Bamba

April 5, 2011
4:37 pm

This week’s show features music by Y La Bamba plus an hour of some of the best alterlatino.

Y La Bamba is the brainchild of Luz Elena Mendoza out of Portland who has been building upon her musical heritage of growing up listening to the Mexican folk records of her immigrant parents by blending with the band’s other influences to create this vintage-dreamy-folk sound that is captivatingly deep.  The band’s subtle yet lush instrumentation is the perfect canvas to showcase Mendoza’s richly textured voice and her ability to authentically capture the emotion of her often deeply personal lyrics.

They are currently working on their new album, which I’m told is tentatively titled, Tragos Amargos, in honor of Mexican folk-legend Ramon Ayala.

As Y La Bamba continue to explore the depths of their sounds, expect many more good things to come from them in the immediate future.

Discover Danay Suarez and some more great hip-hop from the Americas on this week’s show.

I first heard the impressive singing voice of Danay Suarez on the Havana Cultura compilation which was put together for the purpose of chronicling the contemporary music coming out of Cuba in which she was heralded as a great undiscovered talent.  While the Havana Cultura Sessions were a great jazzy introduction to Suarez, it’s on her new debut album, Polvo de la Humedad, in which her full scope of talents really shine.  I have to admit, I was really struck by the conviction of Danay’s delivery & lyrical content; big ups to DJ Juan Data and Remezcla Musica for putting this debut on my Radar!

You can stream Polvo de la Humedad below and buy on ITunes

María y José’s ruidoson is tropicool

March 14, 2011
6:37 pm

This week’s Radio Coyote features a new single by María y José from the new Plásticos y Etéreos compilation.

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below

María y José is the brainchild of Antonio Jimenez out of Tijuana, Mexico who has been making quite a name for himself for his work with groups like Los Espíritus and Unsexy Nerd Ponies, but it is the music that he is making under María y José that I find the most innovative.  Part of this new DIY generation of music makers coming out of Mexico that are continually expanding and exploring the boundaries of fusing traditional and modern musical styles, María y José’s psychedelic and sample heavy sounds that incorporate nostalgic tropical-esque beats are ahead of their time.  His self released debut Espiritu Invisible was easily one of the best of 2010 and is destined to be a standard in defining the “ruidoson” genre.  If you’ve yet to check it out I strongly suggest you do – you can download Espiritu Invisible for free here

His sophmore EP Kibosè and the Violentao EP (which contains remixes of the “mambo violento” first-single by Chico Ye, Sunsplash, Future Feelings and more) are available for free courtesy of Coco Bass.
While you’re waiting for the download to complete, have a listen to Puerto Alegria by María y José  (one of just many great songs available on Revista Plástica’s Plásticos y Etéreos Vol. 2 compilation)

This week’s featured artist is Pepepe (aka Carlos Pesina) who has been making a name for himself in the Mexican Indie scene for both his fantastic remixes and his participation in projects like Los Amparito – a collective of mixers/producers that take traditional Mexican music and add an intricate electronic flavor paying homage the music of 60’s Mexican folk singers like Amparo Ochoa and the regional sounds of Mexico.

Jessy Bulbo wants to be your destiny

4:37 pm

This week’s love-themed episode features music from Jessy Bulbo’s new album Telememe plus other songs from the heart.

Subscribe to the podcast or stream it below

After getting her start in the all-girl punk band, Las Ultrasonicas, Jessy Bulbo left the band in 2005 to pursue a solo career and the Mexican indie scene hasn’t been the same since.  Named after the eccentric lead singer, it’s easy to forget that Jessy Bulbo is actually a band.  With already two critically-acclaimed records under their belt (2005’s Saga Mama & 2009’s Taras Bulba) Jessy Bulbo retained the production of Martin Thulin of Los Fancy Free to bring you catchy erractic music with a punk aesthetic resulting in their most complete album yet.

Telememe is unpredictable and exciting; tender one moment and manic the next – kind of what I imagine dating a schizophrenic is like.  Check out their homage to The StoogesI want to be your dog” titled “Queiro ser tu Destino” and then download the 10 track album for free at her official website
